Take Time for You
When was the last time you did something for you…JUST for you?. Not shopping for the family or someone else, not family laundry, not helping with schoolwork, not going for a walk with the family, not preparing a meal for others even it was your favorite. Something Just. For. You!
In these unprecedented times, it is critical that we take time to recharge ourselves. Those in leadership roles are most likely doing things to help others recharge and prevent burnout. Yet when asked what have we done just for ourselves many share they have done little to nothing. When asked why is that the most common responses I hear are “I have to support my team”, “I’ll do something for myself later”, “ I don’t have time”, “ I am good, I don’t need to do anything” or even “I don’t want to appear selfish”.
The reality is you cannot give your best to others if you do not take care of yourself. Here are a few simple, quick self-care opportunities. Find one or two you believe you can be comfortable starting with and gradually add in other opportunities.
- Consider journaling. Writing things down can be very therapeutic. You may also find you have a hidden talent.
- Do nothing. Turn your phone off. Close down your computer. Find a quiet room. Relax and just breathe!
- Take a walk. Even a short walk outside, around the block, can help you re-energize.
- Do a guided meditation. Using an app such as Calm can give you lots of mediation options.
- Have a good cry. Crying can help reduce pent up emotions as it releases oxytocin and endorphins.
- Indulge in bubbles and candles A soak in a tub relaxes muscles and relieves stress.
- Dance to your favorite music. Go all out…no one is watching!
- Read a book. Pick your favorite genre and let it absorb you.
- Take a power nap. Sleep is the ultimate body recharger.
Whatever you decide to do for self-care just be sure you DO self-care.
Always remember…
